Basic Tailoring, not 'Couture'... Nov 18, 2009 Mine eyes!... Based on the recommendations on Amazon I purchased this book. My copy arrived today, and whilst I can't really assess how well written the step by step instructions are (I'd need to try them out on my sewing machine to see whether they're any better than those in other books), there certainly ain't anything 'Couture' about them... The pictures and fashion are absolutely hideous - one fussy, garish, cheap-looking outfit after another (without forgetting the most heinously upholstered chair!). The picture on the cover should have given it away, sadly I didn't click 'enlarge' to check it out before buying. As for the alleged 'couture' tips: how to make a single/ double welt pocket, adding piping to a jacket, bound buttonholes, etc. these are all basic tailoring... not Couture. Sadly it's not even that good at the basic tailoring... In my copy, there's a picture of a vertically striped jacket that is so poorly fitted it ends up pulling at each button-hole (with tell-tale kinks in the stripes where it pulls). I have many sewing books already, and this only duplicates what I aleady know. A sham in (very) ugly clothes.
Gorgeous embellishment ideas & solid sewing technique info Aug 04, 2009 I'd borrowed Mr. King's Designer Techniques book from the library several years ago, really liked it, but never got around to buying it. When I heard about this new book being published, I bought a copy from Amazon and was pleasantly surprised that it had much of the information & photos from the previous book, plus updated info. This book shows unique ways to create embellishments such as passemetrie and prarie points, and I really appreciated that the text tells us how to adapt the prarie point width for home dec projects. There's also illustrated instructions on creating welt pockets and bound buttonholes. His garments and slipcovered chairs are awe-inspiring, there are lovely photos of his finished works in the book. Check out the photo gallery at his website to see more examples of his work. I recently took a class with him, he's a wonderful teacher and gives clear instructions---this comes through in his writing style too. Overall, a useful book to improve your sewing skills. Also, seamsters who are challenged with figuring out how to add embellishments to garments and home-dec projects will find plenty of ideas and helpful instructions.
Cool tricks! Jul 30, 2009 I have a number of books on sewing and many detailed descriptions of some challenging techniques. However, this book contains things that are not included in other volumes, such as some very interesting and stress-reducing techniques for sheer fabric sewing (and some unusual solutions to french seams, rolled hems and how to make those cool ruffles!)
Being self-taught has allowed Kenneth to develop processes that are unconventional and very creative.
It is a fabulously illustrated and incredibly clearly detailed instruction book and one I am so glad to have in my library!
Yes, the staged photos are pretty dorky, but the close-up details are invaluable.
Maybe the thing about it that is most unusual is his sense of humor. His off-beat phrasing really makes the point and allows you to lighten up and not take the work so seriously!
Buy it soon, as he's offering an addendum, if you have proof of purchase, on creating a clean, neatly hung slant-welt flap pocket! (as of July 29, 2009)
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to go beyond the standard sewing techniques and experiment with some outside-the-box sewing.

Excellent Directions for Quality Results Jul 17, 2009 This book is worth the price of purchase for just the directions on how to insert a zipper. I used the directions twice, on different types of fabric, and got perfect results each time. The illustrations, as well as the written steps, make zippers FUN to insert. Also, Kenneth King's discussion of how to insert piping is right on the money. This book is indespenable for home sewers who want professional results.
Cool Couture May 11, 2009 This is a must-have book for sewers. The explanations are the best I have ever seen and the fantastic photos help you really "get it"!
